What pregnancy week 10 means

Now called a fetus. “10 weeks pregnant” means 10 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 8 weeks. Week 10 runs from 10 weeks 0 days to 10 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 11 weeks.

Your baby at 10 weeks

Tiny nails are beginning to form, and the bones are starting to harden. The baby can bend its limbs, and vital organs such as the kidneys, intestines and liver are beginning to work.

A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a strawberry — roughly about 3 cm and about 4 g. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.

Your body at 10 weeks

Visible veins, a slightly rounder waist and continued nausea are all common at 10 weeks. Some people find small, frequent meals easier to manage than three large ones.

Care and appointments around week 10

Cell-free DNA screening (often called NIPT) is commonly available from about 10 weeks. Whether and when it is offered depends on where you receive care.

The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.
