What pregnancy week 7 means

Rapid brain growth. “7 weeks pregnant” means 7 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 5 weeks. Week 7 runs from 7 weeks 0 days to 7 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 8 weeks.

Your baby at 7 weeks

The brain is growing quickly, producing new cells at a remarkable rate. Arm and leg buds have appeared and are lengthening, and the hands start as small paddle shapes. The kidneys are beginning to form.

A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a blueberry — roughly about 1 cm. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.

Your body at 7 weeks

Many people feel more tired than usual, partly because of rising progesterone. Mood changes, constipation and a heightened sense of smell are common at this stage too.

Care and appointments around week 7

Avoiding alcohol and smoking, and checking any medicines with a pharmacist or doctor, are among the standard general recommendations in early pregnancy.

The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.
