What pregnancy week 26 means
Eyes begin to open. “26 weeks pregnant” means 26 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 24 weeks. Week 26 runs from 26 weeks 0 days to 26 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 27 weeks.
Your baby at 26 weeks
The eyes typically begin to open around 26 to 28 weeks, and the baby may respond to bright light. Brain-wave activity for hearing and vision is developing.
A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a zucchini — roughly about 35.6 cm and about 760 g. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.
Your body at 26 weeks
The growing bump can cause shortness of breath as the uterus presses upwards. Many people also notice more frequent Braxton Hicks contractions.
Care and appointments around week 26
Your provider may start measuring the height of the uterus (fundal height) at each visit to track growth.
The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever, or a change in your baby’s movements — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.
