What pregnancy week 28 means
Third trimester begins. “28 weeks pregnant” means 28 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 26 weeks. Week 28 runs from 28 weeks 0 days to 28 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 29 weeks.
Your baby at 28 weeks
The baby can blink and has eyelashes. Fat continues to build, and the brain is developing more grooves and folds. Most babies are now head-down or moving freely between positions.
A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of an eggplant — roughly about 37.6 cm and about 1 kg. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.
Your body at 28 weeks
The third trimester begins. Many people feel more tired again, and practical preparation starts to feel more real. Backaches, heartburn and frequent urination are common companions.
Care and appointments around week 28
In many care systems, appointments become more frequent from about 28 weeks — often every two weeks until 36 weeks. Some vaccinations and blood tests are commonly scheduled early in the third trimester.
The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever, or a change in your baby’s movements — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.

Months are only a rough grouping; healthcare professionals almost always talk in weeks and days because they are more precise. See Pregnancy Month Calculator for how weeks map to months.
