What pregnancy week 32 means
Getting into position. “32 weeks pregnant” means 32 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 30 weeks. Week 32 runs from 32 weeks 0 days to 32 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 33 weeks.
Your baby at 32 weeks
Toenails and fingernails have grown, and the skin is becoming less wrinkled. Many babies settle into a head-down position around this stage, although some turn later.
A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a squash — roughly about 42.4 cm and about 1.7 kg. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.
Your body at 32 weeks
Space is tight, and you may feel the baby’s movements under your ribs. Braxton Hicks contractions may become more frequent.
Care and appointments around week 32
A growth scan is offered in some situations in the third trimester. If you have questions about your baby’s position, it is common to ask about it from around 34–36 weeks.
The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever, or a change in your baby’s movements — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.
