What pregnancy week 35 means
Space gets tight. “35 weeks pregnant” means 35 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 33 weeks. Week 35 runs from 35 weeks 0 days to 35 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 36 weeks.
Your baby at 35 weeks
The kidneys are fully developed and the liver can process some waste. Most of the basic physical development is complete; the remaining weeks are mainly about gaining weight.
A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a honeydew melon — roughly about 46 cm and about 2.4 kg. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.
Your body at 35 weeks
The uterus reaches up under the ribs. Movements may feel different because there is less room, but the baby should still move regularly.
Care and appointments around week 35
Contact your maternity unit straight away if movements slow down or change — do not wait until the next day.
The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever, or a change in your baby’s movements — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.
