What pregnancy week 36 means
Weekly visits. “36 weeks pregnant” means 36 weeks have passed since the first day of the last menstrual period — the standard way pregnancy is dated. Conception usually happened about two weeks after that date, so the baby’s own age (fetal age) is roughly 34 weeks. Week 36 runs from 36 weeks 0 days to 36 weeks 6 days; on the following day the pregnancy is 37 weeks.
Your baby at 36 weeks
The baby is shedding most of the lanugo and vernix and has full cheeks from building fat. The gut contains meconium, which is usually passed after birth.
A common way to picture it: the baby is now about the size of a romaine lettuce — roughly about 47.4 cm and about 2.6 kg. These are averages; babies grow at different rates, and ultrasound measurements vary.
Your body at 36 weeks
The baby may “drop” lower into the pelvis, which can make breathing easier but increase pressure on the bladder. This is sometimes called lightening.
Care and appointments around week 36
Visits are often weekly from about 36 weeks. Group B streptococcus (GBS) screening is commonly done between 36 and 37 weeks 6 days in countries where routine screening is used.
The timing of tests and appointments differs between countries and care providers. If anything worries you — such as bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, fever, or a change in your baby’s movements — contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit straight away rather than waiting for your next appointment.

Months are only a rough grouping; healthcare professionals almost always talk in weeks and days because they are more precise. See Pregnancy Month Calculator for how weeks map to months.
